You can use it to execute SQL queries and perform database administration tasks directly from the command line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It supports scripting, so you can use it for automating tasks and integrating with other systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SnowSQL communicates with Snowflake&#8217;s servers over a secure, encrypted connection. But it\u2019ll run better if you have 2 GB or more of RAM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also need enough disk space for the the application. That&#8217;s about 50 MB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To run SnowSQL, you need a Snowflake account. So, if you don&#8217;t have one yet, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/snowflake-free-tier\/\">set up a trial account<\/a>. Make sure you keep a note of the username and password you assign during the set-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_To_Download_SnowSQL_For_Windows\"><\/span>How To Download SnowSQL For Windows<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>Go to the official Snowflake <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.snowflake.com\/snowsql\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">download page<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the \u201cSnowSQL for Windows\u201d link.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the msi installer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Run the setup wizard.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the destination folder or keep the default.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finish the installation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Run_SnowSQL_Once_To_Create_A_Configuration_File\"><\/span>Run SnowSQL Once To Create A Configuration File<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You open the command prompt on Windows, type \u201ccmd\u201d into the search bar. This opens a small black terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the installation wizard sets the path on the Windows system, you don\u2019t need to switch to a specific directory to launch snowsql.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I advise that your run the command prompt in administrator mode. This will avoid setup issues. Follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>Enter \u201ccmd\u201d into the search bar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Right-click the command prompt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Run as Administrator.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter \u201csnowsql\u201d on the command line.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The first time you run the command, you\u2019ll see an installation bar. The application is creating the configuration folder. When this is finished, you\u2019ll see the help information appear on screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step is to verify that you can connect to your Snowflake environment. To do this, you need to know your account name, username, and password. If you know these details, skip the next section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_To_Find_Your_Account_Name_And_User_Name\"><\/span>How To Find Your Account Name And User Name<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to provide three details to connect to Snowflake:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Account name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Username<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Password<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When I first installed SnowSQL, I wasn\u2019t sure what the difference was between the account name and username. Read on if you\u2019re not sure about your own details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding your account name<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you sign up for Snowflake, you are provided with an account name which is part of the URL you use to access Snowflake services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To see it, log into your Snowflake account on the website and look at the URL in the browser. You can create more afterward, but let\u2019s stick with the default.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your username is what you log into the Snowflake website with, so you probably know it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, you may have set up your browser to log into the website automatically. If you\u2019ve lost track of your username but can log in, it\u2019s displayed in the top left corner of the Snowflake website interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Connect_SnowSQL_By_Providing_Your_Login_Details\"><\/span>Connect SnowSQL By Providing Your Login Details<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can connect with SnowSQL by providing your login details as parameters every time. You can optionally set up your configuration file to let you bypass this. However, it\u2019s worth verifying your connection explicitly after you\u2019ve installed the application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do so, launch the command prompt and enter this command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>snowsql -a &#91;account name] -u &#91;username]<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>The application will prompt you for your password.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that if you are not in the us-west-2 region, you may have to add your region detail like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>snowsql -a &#91;account name].&#91;region name] -u &#91;username]<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to do if the prompt hangs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It may take a few seconds to connect, depending on your network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your account and user names are correct but you use the wrong password, you\u2019ll get a proper error message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if you\u2019re looking at a blinking cursor for a minute, then your account or user name details are probably wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can ctrl-c to get out of the dialog. This shouldn\u2019t close the prompt window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my case, I have to add \u201c.eu-west-1\u201d after my account name. Otherwise the prompt hangs \u2013 I don\u2019t get an error message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to avoid providing your login details every time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t want to provide the account and user name parameters, you can set up the connection details in the SnowSQL configuration file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest of this article walks you through how to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_Is_The_Configuration_File_On_Windows\"><\/span>Where Is The Configuration File On Windows?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first time you ran snowsql, it created a configuration file in the snowsql folder on Windows. So, you need to find the snowsql folder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The default is under the %UserProfile% directory. This will be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>C:\\Users\\[Windows Account Name]\\<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re still not sure, open a command prompt and print the variable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>echo %USERPROFILE%<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>The SnowSQL folder is named \u201c.snowsql\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you open it in windows explorer, you\u2019ll see the config file. This format consists of sections, each containing key-value pairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The section names are enclosed in square brackets, like [section name], and each key-value pair is on a new line in the format key = value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_To_Edit_Your_Configuration_File\"><\/span>How To Edit Your Configuration File<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Open the config file in notepad and you will see the connections section at the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scroll past the warning messages and you will see a whole lot of connection parameters that are commented out.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/connection-settings-in-config-file.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-897\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/connection-settings-in-config-file.jpg 600w, https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/connection-settings-in-config-file-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>You can remove the comment sign from at least these rows and edit in your own details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>accountname<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>region<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>username<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Should you add your password?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While it is possible to store your password in the configuration file, it&#8217;s generally not recommended for security reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don&#8217;t specify a password in the config file, SnowSQL will prompt you for it each time you connect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_To_Exit_SnowSQL\"><\/span>How To Exit SnowSQL<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a lot of SnowSQL commands you can pick up, but you may have taken one look at the plain interface and decided you\u2019d rather use the website interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the only command you need to know is how to get out of the darn thing.
