640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>My preferred method of testing is to compare the page speed of a page created with Divi and one created with the standard Gutenberg editor (the one that comes with WordPress).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several free online tools will analyze web page speed. I prefer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gtmetrix.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GTMetrix<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is how I tested <a href=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/does-elementor-slow-down-a-website\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"629\">whether Elementor (another page builder) slows down a website<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Divi doesn\u2019t have a free version to install on a WordPress set-up. So, I first took a look at their free trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Demo_Trial_For_Divi_Is_Very_Slow_To_Use\"><\/span>Demo Trial For Divi Is Very Slow To Use<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Divi website provides a free demo feature that should let you build out a page hosted on their site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, I counted nine seconds waiting for elements on the demo page to start appearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, I ran the demo page (with no alterations by me) through a speed tester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"784\" height=\"153\" src=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/divi_demo_gtmetrix.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-647\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/divi_demo_gtmetrix.jpg 784w, https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/divi_demo_gtmetrix-300x59.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/divi_demo_gtmetrix-768x150.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 784px) 100vw, 784px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, that\u2019s \u201cF\u201d for \u201cFail\u201d. The details on the right are the metrics for Google\u2019s core web vitals. Seventeen seconds for LCP (largest contentful paint\u201d) is not good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But perhaps analyzing the demo is unfair? Maybe it has every possible Divi feature on the page and doesn\u2019t represent a \u201creal\u201d website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, I bailed on the demo as being too cumbersome to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, I looked at a real website built with Divi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"User_Experience_On_A_Divi_Website_That_Is_Image_Heavy_And_A_Tip\"><\/span>User Experience On A Divi Website That Is Image Heavy (And A Tip!)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The website I tested is a successful food and fitness blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The site is image-heavy (most food blogs are) but the website is using image optimization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I clicked around the site to get my own \u201cuser experience\u201d before using a tool. The site looks highly professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the pages were noticeably slow when loading. I counted six seconds for the first image to appear on one page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although many of the pages were image-heavy, there were also informational pages that only had one or two images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I noticed that the web designer had ensured that the first of these images was \u201cbelow the fold\u201d i.e. didn\u2019t appear until halfway down the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That greatly improved my user experience. My first impression was no longer watching a big white space slowly become an image. Instead, I was reading interesting content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a great tip for Divi users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Using_A_Speed_Test_Tool_To_Analyse_If_Divi_Slows_Down_A_Website\"><\/span>Using A Speed Test Tool To Analyse If Divi Slows Down A Website<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After browsing through the website, I then turned to a speed testing tool for detailed analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I found a page that had the least number of images on it and ran it through the GTMetrix tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"762\" height=\"143\" src=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/divi_webpage_gtmetrx_core_vitals.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/divi_webpage_gtmetrx_core_vitals.jpg 762w, https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/divi_webpage_gtmetrx_core_vitals-300x56.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 762px) 100vw, 762px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the speed tool also grades this as an F, the core web vitals are drastically better than the demo page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GTMetrix gives you plenty of results to mull over. But I like to focus on these three:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Time To Interactive<\/li><li>Fully Loaded Time<\/li><li>Number of requests<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the results averaged over several test runs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Test Page<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Time To Interactive<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Fully Loaded Time<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Number Of Requests<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Food &amp; Fitness<\/td><td>24.5 seconds<\/td><td>25.4 seconds<\/td><td>476<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We will now explain what we\u2019re actually measuring!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Do_%E2%80%9CTime_To_Interactive%E2%80%9D_And_%E2%80%9CFully_Loaded_Time%E2%80%9D_Mean\"><\/span>What Do \u201cTime To Interactive\u201d And \u201cFully Loaded Time\u201d Mean?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick explanation of the time measurements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTime To Interactive\u201d basically means how long it takes for the web visitor to be able to scroll around the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s more of a \u201cquality\u201d metric. If it\u2019s above two seconds, we should be worried that the user will perceive that the website is slow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The page we were testing took a whopping 24.5 seconds.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFully Loaded Time\u201d is when all the resources have been loaded by the page. That includes every image, all scripts, and any external calls to other sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can have a great user experience with a high \u201cFully Loaded Time\u201d but a low \u201cTime To Interactive\u201d. However, there is very little difference in the metrics on this Divi website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Divi_Makes_A_High_Number_Of_Requests_From_A_Web_Page\"><\/span>Divi Makes A High Number Of Requests From A Web Page<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The page I\u2019m testing isn\u2019t very fancy. It includes these elements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>900 words<\/li><li>ten images<\/li><li>one animated button<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite being fairly simple, the page makes 476 requests or calls for resources. That is astonishingly high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some context, the number of requests on my websites made without a page builder range from 24 to 40.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But never mind me. What about the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> home page for Apple<\/a>? At the time of writing, it\u2019s a big promo for the iPhone 13 Pro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Apple home page notches up 60 requests.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why should you be interested in the number of requests? Each of these is a call made by the web page for a resource. The more there are, the slower the page will load.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Do_You_Find_The_Divi_Builder_Worryingly_Slow\"><\/span>Do You Find The Divi Builder Worryingly Slow?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/waiting.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/waiting.jpg 640w, https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/waiting-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When I was reviewing general feedback from Divi users on social media, I noticed that a few people complained that the Divi Builder was very slow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One user had this to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>For some reason when I write a lot in a day using the Divi builder at some point it becomes SUPER slow. <\/em><\/p><p><em>There is a lag of like 5 seconds between what I am writing and what I see on the screen.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this was not a common complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This particular user responded to some questions by people trying to help. He revealed that he was using very cheap shared hosting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The general advice was that his host server was struggling to provide adequate CPU resources to support the Divi Builder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One commenter noted that he had only experienced similar issues with a Divi site on \u201cGoDaddy on their cheapest tier\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The suggested solution from the community was to upgrade the hosting package or move away from the cheapest hosting service available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That leads us to the next section, as the same advice applies to using Divi in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_To_Do_If_Divi_Is_Slowing_Your_Website\"><\/span>What To Do If Divi Is Slowing Your Website<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve collected the best advice from performance experts on how to speed up Divi websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/racing_car.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-650\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/racing_car.jpg 600w, https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/racing_car-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Speed plugins<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can experiment with various speed plugins that can be installed on WordPress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are recommendations from real Divi users:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>WP Rocket<\/li><li>Autooptimize<\/li><li>WP Fastest Cache<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t stick them all on your site at the same time! Many should not be used together (don\u2019t use multiple caching solutions).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, add one plugin and test your site with a speed testing tool. Then remove that plugin, and try another one until you get the performance required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avoid animations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Divi has a feature it calls \u201cScroll Effects\u201d that provide fancy animations and transitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They look great, but they can be a real drag on your website performance.
