LinkedIn removed it in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"LinkedIns_Recommended_Method_Is_Of_Limited_Use\"><\/span>LinkedIn\u2019s Recommended Method Is Of Limited Use<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a> lets you view how your profile appears outside of the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, this is what people see when they google you and view the LinkedIn results without logging into the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before I get into the instructions, I should point out that this is of limited use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why this is of limited use<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First of all, you still can\u2019t tell what exactly people will see. LinkedIn shows you the public details in your profiles and says that search results will show \u201c<strong>all or some<\/strong>\u201d of these details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Personally, I\u2019d prefer to know whether it\u2019s \u201call\u201d or \u201csome\u201d. To be fair to LinkedIn, this is partially out of their control. I\u2019ll explain that later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other drawback is that LinkedIn won\u2019t show you what a logged in member in your network will see. You may want to be sure of what your boss or a colleague sees, and this is more difficult to tell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, what LinkedIn gives us here is better than nothing. Let\u2019s look at how to access this view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to view your LinkedIn profile as someone outside of the platform<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\"><li>Access the \u201cSettings &amp; Security\u201d in the drop-down menu under your avatar<\/li><li>Choose \u201cVisibility\u201d in the left pane<\/li><li>Click on \u201cEdit your public profile\u201d<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/edit_public_profile.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/edit_public_profile.jpg 540w, https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/edit_public_profile-300x154.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The public profile settings page will open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The left pane shows you details that people may see in search results outside the LinkedIn platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The right pane lets you toggle the visibility on and off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Details you may want to change<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you may not want anyone other than your 1<sup>st<\/sup> degree connections to see your photograph. If you toggle the option buttons in the right pane, you\u2019ll see your photograph (if you uploaded one) replaced with the generic LinkedIn avatar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should also consider if you want your current and\/or previous roles displayed to people in Google searches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the picture below, I\u2019m hiding my current and previous employers from search results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"308\" height=\"283\" src=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/control_sections.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/control_sections.jpg 308w, https:\/\/bandittracker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/control_sections-300x276.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 308px) 100vw, 308px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why changes here are not always guaranteed to take effect<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to understand that when you change the settings here, this may not impact what is shown in Google\u2019s search results for a period of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google and other search engines crawl the internet looking for updated data. But this takes time, and it could be a while before they return to <strong>your<\/strong> data page and see that something has changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How long? It\u2019s impossible to say. But you should probably assume it will take weeks or perhaps even several months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Workaround_1_View_Yourself_In_Incognito_Mode\"><\/span>Workaround #1: View Yourself In Incognito Mode<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem with viewing your own profile when you\u2019re logged out of LinkedIn is that the platform may still \u201crecognize\u201d you from cookies etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this tip, you use the Incognito mode that is available in several browsers including Chrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Copy the link to your profile, open a browser page in Incognito mode, and paste the link to your URL profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This should give you similar results to LinkedIn\u2019s method above. However, it may be more accurate than what the platform is telling you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drawback to this method is that it doesn\u2019t always work. Even in Incognito mode, your profile URL may take you to a login or sign up page without letting you view the details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Workaround_2_Set_Up_Another_LinkedIn_Account\"><\/span>Workaround #2: Set Up Another LinkedIn Account<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may want to see your profile in the way that your connections see it. Currently, there\u2019s no easy way to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s still possible. The solution is to set up a second LinkedIn account with a different email address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll find that the immediate drawback is that it\u2019s not always straightforward to make a connection between your alternate account and your main LinkedIn account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new account isn\u2019t part of your network, so you probably won\u2019t see a \u201cconnect\u201d button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, you can nudge the platform into bringing the two accounts into the same orbit. Once the platform decides you have a 3<sup>rd<\/sup> degree connection, you can make a connection request to turn that into a first degree connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you achieve this?
